
Bread Baking Supplies: Equipment

Basic equipment
- An oven - for baking the bread
- Weighing scales - these are essential for ensuring that all ingredients are measured precisely. Digital scales, whilst more expensive, offer a greater degree of accuracy.
- A measuring jug for water is also useful.
Bread tins
Ideally have a selection of tins of varying sizes for making loaves and rolls. Bread tins are made from aluminium, steel or glass. Non-stick is ideal. It is also possible to use containers such as flowerpots for bread making.
A bread making machine
Bread making machines are not essential, but offer an easy quick way to make bread at home. There are many varieties of bread machine on the market; major brands include Panasonic, Morphy Richards, Kenwood and Breville. Remember that you will often get what you pay for, and some of the cheapest machines might not produce such good results.
Cloth for covering dough during proving
Any clean tea towel is suitable for this purpose.
Extra equipment that may come in useful
Dough Scrapers
Plastic or metal dough scrapers can be used to clear sticky dough from work surfaces and for removing dough from containers.
Griddle or a heavy saucepan
These items are useful for cooking scones and flatbreads.
Dough hook
This is an optional part of many electric food mixers and processors and can be used to knead the dough. Ensure that you follow manufacturer’s instructions and place the mixer on a tea towel to stop it from moving around whilst mixing.
Kitchen thermometer
Helps to ensure that water and dough is at the desired temperature.
