Cake Baking Supplies: Equipment

As with bread making, you do not need any sophisticated equipment for home cake baking. A few basic cake baking supplies are all you need to get started! For a list of cake baking ingredients, please click here.

Oven

Most cakes are baked in the oven. Check the recipe for the correct temperature to bake at. As a rough guide, most sponge cakes require an oven temperature of 170°C, pastry for tarts - 180 – 190°C and crumbles - 200°C.

Weighing scales

Good cake baking requires that ingredients are measured precisely. Digital scales, whilst more expensive, offer a greater degree of accuracy – so are a good investment for regular bakers.

Mixing bowls and jugs

It is useful to have a range of different sizes, for mixing ingredients, whisking eggs and measuring.

Sieve

Sieves are used for sieving flour and icing sugar to ensure that it is finely textured.

Rolling pin

You will need one of these for rolling out pasty, marzipan and icing.

Cake tins

Kit out your store cupboard with a selection of round, square and rectangular tins for baking different types of cakes and sweet loaves. Most recipes refer to tins in inch dimensions – e.g. ‘8 inch round. Tins with removable bases are particularly useful.

Spoons

Wooden and plastic spoons are needed for mixing ingredients.

Cake board

A decent cake board provides a stable, attractive base for larger cakes.

Greaseproof paper / baking parchment

These items will come in useful for wrapping cakes and lining baking trays and tins.

Spatula / cake knife

A spatula or cake knife will help remove mixture from containers and ease cakes out of tins.

Muffin and cake cases

A range of paper cake cases are available from most supermarkets and independent retailers and will allow you to create perfectly sized, individual muffins and buns.

Piping bag

A piping bag can be used for more advanced cake decoration.
