Our Story

Using proven techniques and traditions passed down through six generations, our family has been milling quality flour in Essex for 200 years. Your partner in the perfect bake, Marriage’s was founded by twins William and Henry Marriage. They knew that consistent, quality baking requires the same passion mirrored in our milling process, which blends modern techniques with time-honoured expertise.

Harnessing the prime growing conditions of the Essex area, we’ve been working closely with local farmers for generations to source only the highest-grade wheat. Much of this comes from within 30 miles of Chelmer Mills, including our own family farms. When necessary, we add quality international wheat into our grists.

Born to Be Millers

Our story began in 1824 with William and Henry Marriage. Coming from a family of farmers and millers dating back to the early 1700s, the twin brothers inherited their father’s mill at the young age of seventeen. Inspired by their heritage, W & H Marriage was born.

Venturing out into the world of wheat, the brothers dedicated themselves to setting new standards for the quality of flour. Working closely with local farmers, their passion and dedication continues to inspire us today, and with each generation comes new innovation.

Over 30 years ago, Sampson David Marriage became one of the early champions for organic wheat and flour production. Sampson’s son and current director George Marriage also helped establish the Organic Food Federation, and we play an active role in organic research projects across the agricultural and milling industries.

Today, we continue our commitment to milling quality flour that elevates every bake. Using only premium wheat from local and international farmers, our flour makes for golden loaves and lighter cakes.

Our Farmers

We understand the importance of quality ingredients when it comes to making great products. That’s why we work in partnership with British farmers we can trust to produce the highest quality wheat, as well as select international producers.

Based in Essex, we’re surrounded by the ideal soil and weather conditions for growing premium wheat with the right levels of protein and moisture. We take great pride in sourcing wheat from trusted farmers within 30 miles of Chelmer Mill, and have worked closely with these farming families for generations.

While most of our wheat is sourced locally, we also source wheat from Canadian farms. Known for producing strong wheat ideal for pizza, bread and pasta, our Canadian bread flours are higher in protein for exceptional strength and structure.

Sourcing locally wherever possible, we work in partnership with farmers who never compromise on the quality of their grains. We mill reliable flour for better baking, and it all starts with them.
