Marriage's Timeline

Marriage’s Mills was founded in Chelmsford in 1824 by William and Henry Marriage. The brothers came from a family who had been farming in Essex since about 1650.

Originally the brothers owned two local watermills and one windmill. At this time, the fields were harvested by horse drawn ploughs and wheat was ground using stones powered by wind or water. In 1836, the Marriages introduced a steam engine, which was more reliable and meant wheat could be milled, regardless of whether wind or water was available.

In 1891 Marriage’s introduced the modern mechanised process of roller milling at Moulsham Mill. Chelmer Mill, where Marriage’s is still located today, was built next to the railway in 1899, to ensure easy access to coal supplies transported by train, used to power the mill.

Still an independent family milling business, Marriage’s has seen many changes since the company was founded in 1824 – from the first steam engine and Queen Victoria’s reign to the two World Wars and the first man on the moon. However over the last nearly two hundred years, the company’s values of providing customers with outstanding quality and service have remained the same.
